Act of Independence of Lithuania

The Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed by the Council of Lithuania on February 16, 1918, proclaiming the restoration of an Independent State of Lithuania. Professor of Vytautas Magnus University Liudas Mažylis found the original Lithuanian-language Act of Independence, signed on February 16, 1918, in Germany’s diplomatic archives in Berlin.

Official Simbols of Lithuania

The flag of the Republic of Lithuania. The first discussion on the design of the national flag of Lithuania began in the Great Seimas of Vilnius in 1905. It was decided to choose the colours of the national flag from national fabrics. In 1918 the Council of Lithuania approved the design of the national flag composed of three colours: yellow, green, and red. Yellow colour represents the sun, light and prosperity, green colour symbolises the beauty of nature, freedom, and hope, and the red colour is for earth, courage, and blood spilled for the homeland. On 1 January 1919 the Tricolour was hoisted on the Tower of the Gediminas Castle for the first time. This day is commemorated as the Day of the Lithuanian Flag.

The coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania Vytis. This is one of the oldest coats of arms in Europe. As a symbol of the Lithuanian State it was used for the first time in the 14th century. On 4 September 1991 the current version of designed by Arvydas Každailis was approved.

The anthem of the Republic of Lithuania. Lyrics and music by V. Kudirka. The “National hymn” was published for the first time in the newspaper “Varpas”. Officially it became Lithuanian national anthem in 1920 in the Session of the Constituent Seimas and became the symbol of the sovereignty of Lithuania. During the years of Soviet occupation it was forbidden. In 1988, before the restoration of Lithuanian Independence was proclaimed, the “National hymn” became the national anthem of Lithuania again.
